Capturing LOTUS: A Story of Style, Art, and Connection.

Sometimes, as a photographer, you come across someone whose style and energy feel like the perfect match for your vision. That’s exactly how I felt when I discovered Lotus. I found her Instagram profile through a few mutual friends in the photography world here in Sydney, and right away, her unique aesthetic drew me in. Her look was both bold and effortless, with an incredible collection of tattoos that added so much personality to her images. From the start, I knew I wanted to work with her and create something unforgettable and fun.

I began brainstorming, pulling ideas from my existing mood boards but refining them to fit Lotus’s style even more closely. I wanted a concept that would highlight her asthetic in a way that felt true to her and her art, something that would elevate her unique presence while blending with my own creative style. It took some time to get it just right, but when we finally set a date for the shoot, everything clicked.

The day of the session was exactly what I’d hoped for: a mix of great vibes, mutual respect, and creativity. In every session, I strive to create an environment where my clients and models feel comfortable, energized, and engaged—it’s all about giving them an experience they’ll remember.

Lotus was no exception, and the energy she brought to the shoot was incredible.

Most of our shots were captured on the Leica Q3 43 and the Leica SL2, paired with a 24-90mm lens that really brought out the details in her tattoos and overall look. Together, we created images that felt authentic to who she is and reflective of the vision I had in mind from the beginning.

By the end of the session, it felt like more than just a collaboration. We’d connected on a personal level, and I’m happy to now call Lotus a friend. Our time together wasn’t just about taking great photos—it was about the shared experience and the joy of creating something meaningful.

How to Choose the Perfect Location for Fashion Shoots: A Photographer's Guide

As we gear up for Australian Fashion Week 2024 [AFW], I find myself brainstorming unique locations for fashion shoots. Choosing the perfect spot is essential—it not only sets the tone but also enhances the narrative and elevates the overall aesthetic of your images, whether they're for a magazine editorial, a fashion campaign, or your personal portfolio. Let's delve into the crucial factors to consider when selecting a location for your fashion shoots.

Before scouting locations, it's essential to understand the vision and concept of the shoot. Consider the mood, theme, and style you want to convey through your images. Are you aiming for urban chic, bohemian vibes, or natural elegance? Clarifying the vision will help you narrow down potential locations that align with your creative direction.

Ensure that the chosen location complements the brand or theme you're representing. For example, if you're shooting for a high-end fashion label, opt for upscale venues like luxury hotels, elegant estates, or city landmarks. If the theme is more casual or streetwear-inspired, urban settings, graffiti walls, or eclectic neighbourhoods might be suitable.

Lighting is paramount in photography, so consider the natural light available at each location. Evaluate how the sun's position will affect the shoot throughout the day. Early morning and late afternoon typically offer softer, more flattering light, while midday sun can be harsh and create unflattering shadows. If shooting indoors, assess the available light sources and how they contribute to the desired atmosphere.

Ensure that the chosen location is easily accessible for your team and any equipment you'll be bringing. Check if permits or permissions are required for the shoot, especially if you're planning to use public spaces or private properties. Some locations like the Botanic Gardens require you to have special permissions/permits. Securing necessary permits in advance will prevent any last-minute complications and ensure a smooth photoshoot experience.

Look for locations that offer versatility and unique features to enhance your photographs. Consider architectural details, natural landscapes, or distinctive elements that can add visual interest to your images. Versatile locations with multiple shooting spots allow for a variety of compositions and creative experimentation.

Consider the comfort and practicality of the location for both your team and models. Choose locations with amenities like restrooms, changing areas, and sheltered spots in case of bad weather. Ensure that the environment is safe and conducive to creativity, allowing everyone involved to focus on producing stunning imagery.

Choosing the perfect location for fashion shoots requires careful consideration of various factors, including the shoot's vision, theme, lighting, accessibility, and practicality. By following these guidelines and trusting your creative instincts, you can select locations that elevate your photography and bring your vision to life. Remember to scout locations in advance, communicate effectively with your team, and be open to unexpected opportunities that may arise during the shoot. With the right location as your backdrop, your fashion photoshoots are sure to captivate and inspire.
